Poaching is bad, isn't it?

Not only cause it's illegal but mostly cause it brakes down our own natural balance. If in the States animals die drowned in oil, in Romania they suffocate in improvised fishing nets. Of course, due to the social environment here some will say this guys are just simple, impoverished people with nothing to put on their plate. But where do you draw the line between fishing and poaching, between pinching and draining, above and below the law. And it's not even about the law and all the fines that are not written or the fellows that keep returning on the lake with a brand new net, right after their last one has been picked up.

In the end it's all about the impact on the animals and their/our environment. Every action has a reaction and it's up to us to decide the outcome. We've seen it time and time again all over the world.

Some pictures shot recently on a waste management campaign put together by CRE Bacau in collaboration with local high-school volunteers. Approximately 200 young ecologists managed to gather hundreds of kilos of waste, finishing in the end with the planting of wicker in an area that was previously affected by fire. More about it here (only Romanian).

I often find myself walking down the street, staring carefully at every element of design that compose the man made objects surrounding us every day, the objects that create our daily urbanscape, omnipresent, often taken for granted and usually over-looked. A lighting pole, a bus seat, the shelves in a supermarket, the intercom at your building’s front door, the pen that we daily use, use it without thinking even for a second how many people worked creating this object, who missed a night sleep giving birth to the idea that created the design and the path that this idea took until the final product came into shape.

I’m wondering how many people appreciate the park bench’s curb lines, how many are smiling at the bus stops billboard’s messages, who's really appreciating the trash bins design that makes you think twice about recycling and who’s so frustrated that the lighter they’re using has a child-proof design that it’s sometimes too difficult to light up a cigarette. Engineering, design, architecture, marketing and implementation, all this are present in our quotidian, either we like it or not, either we know it or not, either we care about it or not.

And we should care. It’s well known just how much design truly influences us and marketers all over the world use this impact of design elements to create products that lives in our mind from generation to generation. Just put together the words ”red”, ”white” and ”marketing” and about ninety percent of you will think of ”Coca Cola” (or Santa, from case to case). Art-wise, how many of you stood in awe at the sight of Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel or, referring to colors and the impact that they have on the human brain, just think about how much does interior decorators emphasize on choosing the right color for our indoor wallpaper (it’s well known that dark green is best suited for bedrooms and study rooms because it’s a relaxing color). So the next time you come back from work, being all stressed out and frustrated about your shortcomings, slow down for a minute, take a deep breath, open your eyes and start really looking at the things that surrounds you, start appreciate the quotidian, the usual, the trivial and the profane because the sooner we realize the hard work and the meaningfulness people have put into this little things, the sooner we realize that this cold, unidirectional, commercialized, results-driven and cosmopolitan world today is actually not that lifeless and that everything’s there for a reason.

Yay, a new year awaits us! And a blistering cold one to begin with. I went outside yesterday night to shoot something snowy but nothing really came up. On one hand because, well, I wasn't able to find something worth capturing and on the other hand, I almost froze my ass out, trying to find a subject. So I shot this one on my way back home. Nothing special, I just like the deserted feel of it.

Astazi dimineata a avut loc o puternica explozie intr-un bloc de locatari de pe strada Martir Horia, Bacau. Din cate am inteles este vorba de o acumulare de gaze care a produs intreaga explozie. Doua persoane au ajuns in stare grava la spital. Din fericire nimeni nu a decedat insa pagubele sunt enorme. Abia m-am intors de acolo si, avand in vedere ca au trecut cateva ore bune de la deflagratie, inca se simte un miros innecacios pe toata aria accidentului.

On my way Răcăciuni, some couple of days ago, I passed by this district heating power plant, operating at its full capacity. I stopped the car near the road and snapped some photos away, cause I thought that backlit steam cloud would make a good picture. I was right :)

Oh, and by the way, that's not pollution, that's just water steam blowing off. But people like calling it that way, it's more catchy :)

I'm proud to say that I just had the great opportunity to play around, for the first time, with some very old, very special film cameras!

They belong to the father of a friend of mine, who, in his youth, had the passion of capturing and framing those special moments in time. Yes, I'm talking about photography. He owns no more than three slr cameras, all in good condition, still working just fine, still snapping pictures like they used to do 30 years ago. We started talking and he told me that, besides making pictures, he used to have his dark room too, where he would develop the roles by himself. The pictures would usually go on 8x10 prints, but occasionally he would go on and print even larger formats, for the local school, end-of-the-year-Christmas-party group shots.

Here's the Zenit with a 50mm f2.0. In perfectly good condition, I even snapped away a few frames. I couldn't believe how bright the viewfinder was!

A Yashica FX-3 Super coupled with a 50mm f1.8. This one is a bit newer, not as old as the Zenit, and you can tell that from the materials they used to built the body, which are lighter and more plasticy.

The other one I couldn't figure out what model was it, but it too was in working order, it was the largest of the three and also, had a 50 stuck to it.

I don't know about you, but I'm just dying to go buy a Kodachrome and take this babies out for a walk!
I think having a only 36 frames limit in your light-proof box is such a creativity catalyst that it can open your eyes in a way digital cameras nowadays fail to do it most of the times.

Went on a road trip today, early this morning ... reaaaally early! But considering it was a darn foggy morning and I did woke up at 6AM (!!), it turned out to be a really pleasant ride. The coffee played it's role, of course, on the 'pleasant' part and the sightseeing helped also, but I'm afraid I wasn't able to capture anything interesting thru the whole 260km. All I had to shoot was , well, the darn fog!

I've never been to fond of contemporary art, to be honest. Most of the time I find it a little bit to "out there", maybe too expressive or maybe lacking expressiveness and feelings, truth is it never gotten into me. But recently I visited Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and...WOW! I fell in love the second I entered the front door.

The building itself is a work of art. It's so different, so energetic, so meaningful that you have to love it! It has that "je nais se quoi", as some might say; a combination of architecture, design and 00's visual art style that makes it just "the place to be" for the modern, northern artist.

Helsinki Olympic Stadium

The Helsinki Olympic Stadium (Finnish: Helsingin olympiastadion; Swedish: Helsingfors Olympiastadion), located in the Töölö district about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the center of the Finnish capital Helsinki, is the largest stadium in the country, nowadays mainly used for hosting sports events and big concerts. The stadium is best known for being the center of activities in the 1952 Summer Olympics. It was built however to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were moved from Tokyo to Helsinki before being cancelled due to World War II. The stadium was also the venue for the first World Athletics Championships in 1983 as well as for the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. It is also the home stadium of the Finland national football team.

Construction of the Olympic Stadium began in 1934 and it was completed in 1938. The Olympic was designed in functionalistic style by the architects Yrjö Lindegren and Toivo Jäntti. The stadium was completely modernized in 1990–1994 and also renovated just before the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. Its spectator capacity was at its maximum during the 1952 Summer Olympics with over 70,000 spectator places. Nowadays the stadium has 40,000 spectator places. During concerts, depending on the size of the stage, the capacity is 45,000 - 50,000.

The tower of the stadium, a distinct landmark with a height of 72 metres (236 ft), is open for visitors and offers impressive views over Helsinki. It is possible to see into the adjacent Finnair Stadium.

Midsummer may simply refer to the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, but more often refers to specific European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice, or that take place around June 24 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures.

European midsummer-related holidays, traditions, and celebrations are pre-Christian in origin.

They are particularly important in Northern Europe - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - but are found also in Ireland, parts of Britain (Cornwall especially), France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine, other parts of Europe, and elsewhere - such as Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, and also in the Southern Hemisphere (mostly in Brazil, Argentina and Australia), where this imported European celebration would be more appropriately called Midwinter.

Midsummer is also sometimes referred to by Neopagans and others as Litha, stemming from Bede's De temporum ratione in which he gave the Anglo-Saxon names for the months roughly corresponding to June and July as "se Ærra Liþa" and "se Æfterra Liþa" (the "early Litha month" and the "later Litha month") with an intercalary month of "Liþa" appearing after se Æfterra Liþa on leap years. The fire festival or Lith- Summer solstice is a tradition for many pagans.

Solstice celebrations still center around the day of the astronomical summer solstice. Some choose to hold the rite on the 21st of June, even when this is not the longest day of the year, and some celebrate June 24th, the day of the solstice in Roman times.

Although Midsummer is originally a pagan holiday, in Christianity it is associated with the nativity of John the Baptist, which is observed on the same day, June 24, in the Catholic, Orthodox and some Protestant churches. It is six months before Christmas because Luke 1:26 and Luke 1.36 imply that John the Baptist was born six months earlier than Jesus, although the Bible does not say at which time of the year this happened.

In Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Quebec (Canada), the traditional Midsummer day, June 24, is a public holiday. So it was formerly also in Sweden and Finland, but in these countries it was, in the 1950s, moved to the Saturday between June 20 and June 26.

The celebration of Midsummer's Eve was from ancient times linked to the summer solstice. Some people believed that mid-summer plants, especially Calendula, had miraculous healing powers and they therefore picked them on this night. Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southwards again. In later years, witches were also thought to be on their way to meetings with other powerful beings, though this is not the case today.

In Sweden, Mid-summer celebration originates from the time before Christianity; it was celebrated as a sacrifice time in the sign of the fertility.

The solstice itself has remained a special moment of the annual cycle of the year since Neolithic times [citation needed]. The concentration of the observance is not on the day as we reckon it, commencing at midnight or at dawn, as it is customary for cultures following lunar calendars tend place the beginning of the day on the previous eve at dusk at the moment when the Sun has set. In Sweden, Finland and Estonia, Midsummer's Eve is considered the greatest festival of the year, comparable only with Walpurgis Night, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve.

In the 7th century, Saint Eligius (died 659/60) warned the recently converted inhabitants of Flanders against the age-old pagan solstice celebrations. According to the Vita by his companion Ouen, he'd say: "No Christian on the feast of Saint John or the solemnity of any other saint performs solestitia [summer solstice rites] or dancing or leaping or diabolical chants."

As Christianity entered pagan areas, midsummer celebrations came to be often borrowed and transferred into new Christian holidays, often resulting in celebrations that mixed Christian traditions with traditions derived from pagan Midsummer festivities.

Finland

Midsummer bonfire in Seurasaari. Bonfires are very common in Finland, where many people spend their midsummer in the countryside outside towns.

Before 1316, the summer solstice was called Ukon juhla, after the Finnish god Ukko. In Karelian tradition, many bonfires were burned side by side, the biggest of which was called Ukko-kokko (the "bonfire of Ukko"). After the celebrations were Christianized, the holiday is known as juhannus after John the Baptist (Finnish: Johannes Kastaja).

Since 1955, the holiday is always on a Saturday (between June 20 and June 26). Earlier it was always on June 24. A lot of the celebration of midsummer takes place on midsummer eve, when many workplaces are closed and shops have to close their doors at noon.

In the Finnish midsummer celebration, bonfires (Finnish kokko) are very common and are burnt at lakesides and by the sea. Often two young birch trees (koivu) are placed on either side of the front door to welcome visitors. Swedish-speaking Finns often celebrate by erecting a midsummer or maypole (Swedish midsommarstång, majstång).

In folk magic, midsummer was a very potent night and the time for many small rituals, mostly for young maidens seeking suitors and fertility. Will o wisps were believed to be seen at midsummer night, particularly to finders of the mythical "fern in bloom" and possessors of the "fern seed", marking a treasure. An important feature of the midsummer in Finland is the white night and the midnight sun. Because of Finland's location spanning around the Arctic Circle the nights near the midsummer day are short or non-existent. This gives a great contrast to the darkness of the winter time.

Many Finns leave the cities for Midsummer and spend their holiday in the countryside. Rituals include bonfires, sauna and spending time together. Heavy drinking is also associated with the Finnish midsummer.

Many music festivals of all sizes are organized on the Midsummer weekend. It's also common to start summer holidays on Midsummer day. For many families the Midsummer is the time when they move to the countryside to their summer cottage by the lake. Midsummerday is also the Day of the Finnish Flag. The flag is hoisted at 6 pm on Midsummer eve and flown all night till 9 pm the following evening.

Romania

In Romania, the Midsummer celebrations are named Drăgaica or Sânziene. Drăgaica is celebrated by a dance performed by a group of 5-7 young girls of which one is chosen as the Drăgaica. She is dressed as a bride, with wheat wreath, while the other girls, dressed in white wear a veil with bedstraw flowers. Midsummer fairs are held in many Romanian villages and cities. The oldest and best known midsummer fair in Romania is the Drăgaica fair, held in Buzău between 10 and 24 June every year.
